"I wish my readers would become old, and read me from afar."
"A biographer that takes my printed works as the starting point to describe my life can’t bring much more than rubbish to light."
"Everyone has thoughts. Few express them as ideas. Even fewer know to describe the form and colour of those ideas. And those who do, frequently hear: ’That’s what I thought.’ Yes, except for the circumference, except for the colour, except for the shadows. That is to say: except for a lot."
Discordia performs DEK, about the life and work of Eduard Douwers Dekker, master of paradox, who wrote under the name Multatuli.
His name and his fantastic fiction always play a role in the thoughts that go around during the making of many of Discordia's performances, so it was to be expected that this piece would happen at some point.
Here they are: the 'ideas', the quotations, the provocations, alienating and committed stories from the incredible "Max Havelaar”, the autobiography of the young writer called “Woutertje’, explored in a contemporary construction of dialogues and fragmentary figures.
From “Max Havelaar': "Good! Well..., all good....! But the Javanese is ill-treated!" For it is our firm belief that Providence has not ordained a people, to whatever race they belong, to be abused for ever; And that Java was not created for the sole purpose of being 'the cork on which the Netherlands floats’.
